Part 1: The Summers I Was Never Invited

My mother stood outside my bedroom, gently pushing the door open after noticing how quiet the house had become.

“Have you already gone?”

The room answered her before anyone else could. Every shelf had been cleared, the closet stood empty, and nothing remained except a single envelope resting neatly in the middle of the bed with my name written across the front. By the time she unfolded the letter, I was already hundreds of miles away, leaving behind the home I had spent eighteen years trying to belong to.
