I was sitting beside Marlene at the American Legion hall in Paducah, picking walnuts out of a slice of carrot cake because my bridgework still catches on them every single time. It was loud in there. The air smelled like industrial floor wax and the kind of cheap, beefy meatballs that come out of a frozen bag by the dozen.
