I was sitting at the kids’ table, even though I am fifty-two years old. That is just how family math works when the house gets crowded and the extra folding chairs come out of the garage. Aunt Carol had spent two full days in that kitchen. The house smelled like cloves, brown sugar, and the lemon-scented furniture polish she used on the dark walnut sideboard. Everything was perfect, the way it always was when Carol was in charge. The ham was glazed, the green beans were slow-cooked with bacon, and the yeast rolls were rising in the warming drawer.
