He didn’t. “Mom,” I whispered. She sighed. “You scared us half to death.”

I almost laughed. It came out as a dry, painful breath instead. “Seventeen calls.”

She blinked. “What?” “I called you seventeen times.”

 

My mother’s expression hardened. “I told you, Harper. We were asleep.”
