I looked at my daughter’s tearful eyes.

“Oh,” I said. “I know Westbrook Industries very well.”

What Adrian did not know was that twenty-two years earlier, my late husband and I had quietly rescued Westbrook Industries from collapse through our family investment trust.

That trust still controlled thirty-eight percent of the company’s voting shares.

And I was the only person authorized to cast them.

Part 2: The Flash Drive

Adrian mistook my calmness for weakness. “Emily has been unstable for months,” he said. “She checks my calls, questions my spending, and embarrasses me.” Emily stared at him. “I found invoices.” His jaw tightened. “What invoices?” I asked. “Consulting payments,” she said. “To companies that don’t exist. Adrian told me to delete the files.” Celeste snapped, “A wife has no business digging through her husband’s work.”

I glanced at the clock. Twenty-two minutes had passed.

“You targeted the wrong woman,” I said. Adrian laughed. “Emily?” “No,” I said. “Me.”

I removed my watch and placed it on the table. A tiny green light blinked beneath the face. Celeste went pale. “State law allows one-party consent,” I said. “Everything said since I entered this room has been transmitted to secure cloud storage.”

Adrian lunged for the watch. I moved it out of reach and stood. He grabbed my arm and shoved me back against the sideboard. Plates crashed to the floor, but I stayed upright.

Then the doorbell rang. Once. Twice.

Adrian released me and straightened his shirt. “Smile,” he ordered. “All of you.” He walked to the front door with the confidence of a man expecting harmless visitors. But when he opened it, his smile disappeared.

On the porch stood the chair of Westbrook Industries with six board members. Beside them were Commissioner Raymond Cole, two detectives, and Dr. Chen with a medical bag.

Part 3: The Boardroom Came to Him

“Adrian Westbrook,” Commissioner Cole said, “step away from the doorway.”

Adrian looked from the commissioner to the board. “This is a family misunderstanding.”

Diana Hayes, the board chair, lifted a folder.

“No. This is an emergency governance meeting.”

Celeste snapped, “You cannot enter without a warrant.”

“One is being prepared,” the commissioner replied. “But Mrs. Montgomery invited us, and her daughter is requesting help.”

Emily stepped beside me, pale but steady.

“I want them inside.”
