Part 1: The Stranger in My Apartment

I returned to Columbus sixty-two days earlier than expected.

My overseas consulting contract had ended suddenly.

Instead, when the elevator opened, my neighbor Harold grabbed my wrist.

“Daniel,” he whispered, staring toward apartment 10B. “Please tell whoever is staying in your place to stop the noise. None of us have slept in weeks.”

I thought he was confused.

Then Mrs. Lopez explained that a man had been living in my apartment for nearly two months. He left every morning, returned around six, carried groceries upstairs, collected packages, and greeted everyone politely.

But around midnight, the neighbors heard screaming.

“That’s impossible,” I said. “No one has a key.”

My door showed no damage. When I unlocked it, the apartment smelled of coffee, clean laundry, and bacon. Someone had not simply entered my home.

Someone had been living there.

Then I noticed that every family photograph had disappeared. Pictures of my daughter, my parents, and our vacations were gone, leaving pale rectangles on the walls.

A bedroom door opened.

A man in his early forties stepped into the hallway wearing my bathrobe and holding my coffee cup.

“What are you doing in my apartment?” he demanded.

“This is my home,” I said. “Who are you?”

He calmly claimed his name was on the lease and threatened to report me for breaking in.

The stranger’s confidence cracked.

“There’s no need to call anyone. This man is confused.”

“You’re wearing my clothes,” I replied. “Where are my photographs?”

“You weren’t supposed to return yet,” he said. “You were supposed to be gone until August.”

“How do you know that?”

He lowered his eyes.

“Because I arranged for you to leave.”

Part 2: The Son I Never Knew

The consulting job had seemed like incredible luck.

A company offered me a paid overseas project requiring my exact experience. Travel and expenses were covered, and the contract was supposed to last four months.

Now the stranger admitted the company was fake. He had created the job, funded my salary, and assigned meaningless work to keep me away.

“Why?” I asked. “Who are you?”

“My name is David Keller,” he said. “I needed to understand the man who raised the son you never knew existed.”

My legs weakened.

“I don’t have a son. I have a daughter named Emily.”

David asked whether I remembered Carol Merrick.

Carol and I had dated briefly when I was twenty-two. One day, she moved away without explanation. I later married, became a father, divorced, and continued with my life.

David told me Carol had been pregnant when she left.

She raised her child alone and told him his father was dead.

“You’re saying you’re my son?”

“I’m saying Carol was my mother,” he replied. “Whether you are my father is what I came here to discover.”

After Carol died, David found letters and photographs revealing my name. For forty years, he had believed his father was dead. Suddenly, he learned I was alive and completely unaware of him.

He considered knocking on my door, but feared I would reject him. He imagined I already had a real family and no room for a middle-aged stranger claiming to be my son.

So he studied me instead.

He wanted to know who I was when no one was watching. Had he lost a good father, or had Carol protected him from a bad one?

He engineered my absence, moved into my apartment, read my books, and examined my photographs.

He removed the pictures because they hurt too much. They showed a family history that had continued without him.

“The screaming Harold heard?” I asked.

David looked down.

“I have nightmares. They began after my mother died.”

His voice broke.

“I know what I did was wrong. I invaded your life because I was too afraid to ask whether you wanted me.”

I should have been furious.

Instead, I saw Carol in his face.

“Show me the proof.”

David returned with a worn wooden box.

Inside were photographs of Carol holding a baby who slowly grew into the man before me. There were also letters addressed to me but never mailed.

In one, Carol described David’s birth. She had picked up the phone many times, intending to call, but fear always stopped her. As the years passed, telling the truth became harder until silence became permanent.

Her fear had stolen forty years from all three of us.

“You could have simply told me,” I said.

“I thought you might close the door.”

“I wouldn’t have.”

“But I didn’t know that,” he whispered. “Now I do. I found a father worth knowing, and I ruined everything before we even began.”

Part 3: The Door Stayed Open

I thought about the loneliness required to create such an elaborate deception.

David had not wanted money or revenge. He had wanted certainty. He needed to know whether asking to be loved would destroy him.

I remembered the lonely nights overseas, wondering what purpose remained now that Emily lived in Chicago and my career was slowing down.

Then I looked at the frightened man standing in my bathrobe.

“Harold,” I said, “put the phone away.”

My neighbor stared at me.

“He broke into your home.”

“I know. But this is a family matter.”

The word family shattered David’s composure.

He began to cry.

I crossed the room and put my arms around my son.

He held me like a drowning man clinging to the first solid thing he had found in years.

We still had consequences to face. We untangled the fake company, the payments, and the building security. David had used his own money, and I chose not to press charges. Sending my newfound son to prison would not restore the years we had lost.
