“I am outside my house,” I said. “Not inside.”
Mrs. Alvarez went quiet in the professional way people do when they stop multitasking. “Mr. Whitaker, do not enter until you have another adult present.”
Through the glass, Vicki held up a paper. Dale tapped the signature line.
Then Mrs. Alvarez said, “I have a pending fiduciary request submitted 5 days ago by a Victoria Whitaker.”
I asked who the second contact was.
She read the name, and it was my brother Dale.
My chest felt hollow, like a dry boxcar. I told Mrs. Alvarez to lock the whole thing down. I told her I had 9 minutes of audio on my phone of them dividing the money before my bags were even through the door.
She told me to stay where I was.
I walked back down the steps, my cane tapping the concrete, and opened Curtis’s passenger door. He looked at me over his glasses.
“You want me to go knock?” Curtis asked.
“No,” I said, sliding into the seat. “Let’s wait till Friday.”
