The pink spoon was the first thing I noticed when the counselor pulled the items out of Nora’s backpack. It was a cheap, plastic thing I bought at the dollar store, but it had a distinct bite mark on the handle where Nora had chewed it while watching cartoons on my porch. To anyone else, it was trash. To Nora, it was the only thing that kept her tethered to the world she knew.
