The baby was sleeping in that clear plastic bassinet they roll around the maternity ward. Her name was Hazel. She had a little pink cap that kept sliding down over her eyes because her head was so small, and she breathed with this tiny, whistling snore that made Claire reach out every few minutes just to touch her blanket and make sure she was still there. Claire had been through eighteen hours of labor before the doctor finally shook his head and said we were heading down the hall for an emergency C-section. She had a long, angry red line across her middle now, held together with surgical glue and steri-strips, and she could barely turn her head on the pillow without crying out from the pull of it.
