I thought about all those Friday afternoons when he told me he was going down to the hardware store for a new washer or a spool of copper wire. I thought about the way he always smelled faintly of cut grass and old iron when he came home just before dark to wash his hands at the utility sink in the garage.
He hadn’t been lying about the hardware store, not really. He had just stopped somewhere else first.
I reached down and turned the key. The Buick started up with that familiar, rattling roar, and I put it in gear, driving out past Section C, Row 9, where the white silk daisies were already catching the evening dew in the dark.
