The nurse folded the paper.

Kyle’s jaw tightened.

She swallowed.

Kyle turned sharply.

“Does your mother know exactly where that laptop is?”

She nodded.

“In my bedroom. Under the loose floorboard beside Dad’s old dresser.”

Detective Alvarez immediately called another officer.

Kyle had no idea we were coming.

And for the first time since I arrived at the hospital, I felt something I hadn’t felt in years.
