The black crayon snapped in Caleb’s hand at 2:47 on a Wednesday afternoon.

One half rolled under my kitchen table. The other half stayed between Caleb’s fingers while the family picture lay in front of us, six stick people, one dog, and a thick black scribble where a face should’ve been. I asked who Caleb had covered up, and Caleb pressed the broken crayon down so hard the paper tore.
