She shrugged.

“Not long.”

I smiled weakly.

“Did you sleep okay?”

Another shrug.

Then she asked the question I had been dreading.

“Mom… are we homeless?”

My heart stopped.

“No.”

“But we don’t have a house.”

“We have a home.”
