The bank envelope with Jeremy’s truck-tag money was on Bonnie’s counter when I asked her to look up my marriage record. I’d brought $98.50 in cash, folded inside the envelope, and I’d already signed the little form for the tags. Then Bonnie typed Jeremy Lee Tolley’s name, leaned closer to her screen, and said, “Hon, which one?”
I know what you’re thinking. I know you’ll hate me. I might deserve that. I stole Jeremy from Lacey Burcham when I was twenty, and I have told myself for years that I was young and dumb, as if that makes it smaller. It doesn’t. There is a reason I asked Bonnie to look up those records, but I didn’t know the whole of it yet.
I said, “He’s only got one wife.”
Bonnie didn’t say anything. She turned her screen a few inches toward me.
Two entries. Same groom. One was our license from 2008. The other was dated three years ago, in the same county office where I was standing with his tag money in my purse.
I looked at the screen long enough for the letters to stop looking like letters. The second entry had a bride’s name, but Bonnie said the full record would show it. I asked her to print a certified copy. She said it would take until Thursday because the old records had to come up from the basement.
“Do you want to go ahead?” she asked.
“Yes, ma’am.”
I paid the twelve dollars with my own money. Not Jeremy’s. I remember that part because it was the first thing I could control.
Bonnie had a name tag pinned to her cardigan and reading glasses hanging from a beaded chain. There was a little crack in the counter’s plastic cover right by my hand. I kept rubbing it with my thumb while she filled out the request. I don’t know why I remember that. I guess I needed something small to do while my head kept trying to tell me I’d read the screen wrong.
Bonnie asked me to check the spelling on my name. “Jill Tolley,” she said.
“That’s right.”
She looked up at me. “You’ll get a call when it’s ready.”
I nodded and took Jeremy’s envelope back. The tags were still due. His handwriting was on the list tucked inside it: tags, oil change, love you, Jill-girl. He signs things like that. Grocery lists, birthday cards, notes stuck to the fridge. I put the list back in the envelope because I didn’t know what else to do with it.
There was a line of people behind me, so I moved away from the counter. I didn’t cry. I didn’t drop anything. I just stood by the wall holding that envelope, with the $98.50 pressing into my palm through the paper.
It’s probably best if I say the part about Lacey plainly. I knew Jeremy was seeing her when I started after him. I knew she expected to marry him. I was twenty, and I wanted him, and I decided what I wanted mattered more than what I knew. I kept calling it love later because that sounded better than selfish.
I wasn’t some helpless girl who got swept along. I made choices. Lacey left for Nashville that summer. Jeremy started coming around me more, and I let him. I’d see her at Kroger sometimes after that, and I’d make a point of looking busy. Years later I saw her by the ginger ale, thin enough that her scarf seemed too big. I hid by the bread aisle. I told myself she hadn’t seen me.
I think she had.
I never apologized. I got married to Jeremy. We had a son, now sixteen, who eats more than both of us and leaves his shoes in the hall. We bought a small house and paid the mortgage. Jeremy worked roofing. I worked the distribution center out by the bypass. That was our life, if you asked me.
My phone buzzed in my hand. Jeremy had texted, “Did you get the tags?”
I typed, “They’re handling it.”
I nearly added, “I found something.” I erased it. Then I put the phone away.
The reason I’d asked Bonnie for the record was open enrollment. Jeremy’s company had dropped his insurance in the spring, or that’s what he told me. I was adding him to mine, and the woman in HR said she needed a certified copy of the marriage license. A picture on my phone wouldn’t do.
“Certified copy, hon,” she’d said. “Not a picture.”
So I went to the county clerk to prove I was his wife. I did not expect to be standing there with two licenses under his name.
Bonnie called me Thursday morning. I was on the floor at work, scanning boxes, when my phone buzzed. I had to ask my lead to step away before I could answer.
“It’s here,” Bonnie said.
I told her I’d be there.
My lead looked at the clock. “You taking your break?”
“No. I need to leave.”
“Jill, you know where you are on write-ups.”
“I know.”
That was true. I was on my last one for attendance. If I left with no notice, they could walk me out. We had a mortgage and a kid who never stopped growing. My paycheck was the steady one. Still, I drove to the clerk’s office.
Bonnie saw me coming. She had the envelope in front of her, face down, one hand resting on it.
“Honey, do you want to sit down before you read it?”
“No, ma’am.”
“There’s a bench right there.”
“I’ll stand.”
I wanted my legs under me. That’s all. I’ve done ten-hour shifts on those legs for six years. Twenty-two thousand steps on some days, according to the scanner. I figured they could hold me up long enough to read one piece of paper.
Bonnie slid it closer but didn’t let go right away.
“Before you open it,” she said, “I need to tell you I can’t explain what any of it means legally.”
“I’m not asking you to.”
“I just don’t want you thinking I can tell you whether it counts.”
“I understand.”
She kept her hand on the envelope another second. Then she let go.
I turned it over. It was a manila envelope, plain as anything. I don’t know what I expected it to look like. I thought about the last three years of Tuesdays, which is an odd thing to think about in a clerk’s office. Jeremy had a “buddy’s side job” in Nashville every Tuesday. He’d leave after work and come home tired. I’d put his dinner in the oven. Some nights he’d eat it. Some nights he’d say he wasn’t hungry.
I had made that sound normal in my own head so many times. Tuesdays, a plate in the oven, his boots by the back door. He’d come into the kitchen and hug me a little longer than usual. I thought that meant he missed me. Or needed me. I know how stupid that sounds now, but it didn’t sound stupid when I wanted it to be true.
I found a Vanderbilt parking stub in his truck last winter. I asked him about it while he was wiping his hands at the sink. He said his buddy’s wife was sick and he’d taken them in. I asked why he hadn’t told me.
“Didn’t want to make a whole thing out of it,” he said.
I believed him because I wanted to. I even felt sorry for his friend’s wife, whoever she was. Then I noticed the date was Tuesday and the stub was folded into the pocket behind the registration. I put it back. I didn’t ask again.
That’s what I do when an answer might cost me something. I tell myself I’m being kind. I stay quiet, and I call it keeping the peace.
Bonnie was watching me. “Do you want me to call somebody?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
I opened the envelope. The paper inside was official, with the county seal and the names in neat boxes. I read the heading first. Tennessee Marriage License. Then I read the groom’s name.
Jeremy Lee Tolley.
I knew his handwriting. It was on birthday cards and grocery lists and the tag envelope in my purse. The J had that careful little top stroke, like he was taking his time even when he wasn’t.
Bonnie said, “Take your time.”
I looked at the bride’s line. Then I looked at the signature. It was a little shaky, but I knew the name before I reached the end.
Lacey Burcham.
I read it again.
Lacey Burcham.
Bonnie said, “Jill?”
“I’m fine.”
I wasn’t. I just didn’t want her to have to take care of me.
The paper said the license had been issued and returned. Bonnie couldn’t tell me if the marriage counted. She couldn’t tell me what Jeremy had said when he applied, or why the record had been filed. She could only show me what was there.
I pointed at the date. “Three years ago?”
“That’s the date on the record.”
“Did somebody make a mistake?”
“I can’t tell you that.”
“Could there be two people with his name?”
“There could be. But the birth date matches the one on your record.”
I let out a small laugh. Not because it was funny. It came out like a cough.
Bonnie said, “I’m sorry.”
I was mad at her for saying that, which wasn’t fair. She had done nothing. She’d found the record, told me what she could, and kept her hand on the envelope because she knew I might not want to touch it yet.
I lifted the page. There was a second page with the return information. I checked the dates again. Jeremy’s address was our house. The same house where I’d put his Tuesday dinners in the oven. The same address on the tag list he’d written “love you, Jill-girl” beside.
Bonnie said, “You want me to make you another copy?”
“No.”
“Do you want to sit down?”
“No.”
I said no to everything. I was good at that.
My phone buzzed again. Jeremy this time, calling. I watched his name show on the screen. Bonnie turned her eyes away, giving me a little privacy even though she couldn’t go anywhere.
I answered.
“Did you get the tags?” he said.
“No.”
“What do you mean, no?”
“I’m at the clerk’s office.”
“I know. Did you get them?”
“I found your other marriage license.”
Nothing came back right away. I could hear something on his end, maybe a truck, maybe the radio. Then he said, “Where are you?”
“County clerk.”
“Jill, don’t do this over the phone.”
“Who’s Lacey?”
He took a breath. I heard it clearly. “You have the record?”
“I’m looking at it.”
“Can you come home?”
“No. Tell me who she is.”
“You know who she is.”
“I want to hear you say it.”
He went quiet for a few seconds. I pinched the corner of the record. It bent under my finger.
“She’s Lacey,” he said.
“I know that.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Did you marry her?”
He didn’t answer fast enough.
“Jeremy.”
“Yes.”
My mouth went dry. I looked at the clerk’s counter instead of the page. The crack in the plastic was right where it had been Monday. I thought about a stupid crack in a counter because the rest of me was trying not to fall apart in front of Bonnie.
“You married Lacey three years ago?”
“Yes.”
“While you were married to me.”
“I know.”
“Were you going to tell me?”
“I don’t know.”
That was his answer. Not no. Not yes. I didn’t know.
I said, “Why?”
He made a sound that could have been a sigh. “She was sick.”
“Was she?”
“She needed help getting to Nashville. She didn’t have anybody.”
“You had me.”
“I know.”
“Then why marry her?”
He said he didn’t know at first. Then he said the hospital paperwork was hard. Then he said she’d wanted to feel safe. Each answer got smaller. I let him talk because I needed to hear how far he’d go.
“Did she know about me?” I asked.
“Yes.”
“Did she know we were still married?”
“Yes.”
There it was. I had spent years acting like Lacey was a name from when I was young. A thing that happened before our mortgage, our son, the Sunday dinners. But she knew. She knew my name. She knew I was still in that house. She signed the line anyway.
And I had no clean place to stand. I’d done my own version of it twenty years earlier. I knew Lacey had a claim on him, and I wanted him anyway. I used to tell myself that Jeremy had made his own choice. He had. But I’d helped him make it, and I had never once asked what it cost her.
“Are you still seeing her?” I asked.
“It’s not like that.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“She’s been going through treatment. I drove her when she needed me.”
“Every Tuesday?”
“Yes.”
I pressed my lips together. Bonnie had moved a box of forms to the other side of the counter. She was pretending to be busy, and I was grateful.
“What did you tell her about me?”
“I told her I’d handle it.”
“Handle what?”
“I don’t know.”
“You keep saying that.”
“I’m sorry, Jill.”
“You keep saying that, too.”
I could hear the old Jeremy in his voice, the one who used to say “Jill-girl” when he wanted me to soften. I could hear the boy I wanted when I was twenty. I could hear the man who had lied to me for three years. It was all one voice. That was the problem.
I asked him if the marriage had been a real ceremony.
“Yes,” he said.
“Who was there?”
“Just a couple people from the church. Lacey’s cousin was there.”
“Did you wear a ring?”
“No.”
“Did you say vows?”
“Jill.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
I looked down at the certified copy again. The signature on the bride’s line was shaky blue ink. I thought about Lacey in the grocery store, standing by the ginger ale with a cart that barely had anything in it. I had hidden from her because I didn’t want to say I was sorry. Now I was standing at a county counter with proof that Jeremy had gone back and married her.
I said, “You brought me there to prove I was your wife.”
“I didn’t know you’d find it.”
“You asked me to get the tags.”
“I needed them.”
“You wrote ‘love you, Jill-girl’ on the list.”
“I do love you.”
I laughed again, and this time I heard it. It sounded mean.
“You can love me and do this?”
“I didn’t know what to do.”
“You had three years to figure it out.”
“I know.”
“Stop saying you know.”
He went quiet.
Then he said, “I thought I could keep both of you from getting hurt.”
That was the first honest thing he’d said, and it was still a lie about what he thought. He’d kept himself from having to choose. He’d let me make his dinners, add him to my insurance, renew his tags, while he drove to Nashville and stood beside Lacey. Maybe he told himself she had no one else. Maybe he told himself I’d never find out. Maybe he loved both of us in whatever broken way a person can love two women and still lie to them.
I didn’t say any of that. I didn’t have to. I heard Bonnie’s printer start behind her, and the little sound made the room feel normal in a way I couldn’t stand.
“Are you coming home?” Jeremy asked.
“I don’t know.”
“You’re not going to tell our son this way.”
“I’m not telling him anything at the clerk’s office.”
“I mean, don’t make this worse.”
“You made it worse.”
“I know.”
“Stop.”
He stopped.
I asked him if Lacey was still sick. He said yes. I asked if she knew he was talking to me. He said he hadn’t told her. I asked if she knew he was coming home to me every night. There was another pause.
“She knew I was married,” he said.
“That’s not what I asked.”
“I know.”
I took a breath and let it out through my nose. The paper was still bent where my finger had pressed it. I smoothed it on the counter, slowly, like the crease mattered.
Bonnie stepped closer. “Do you want a minute?”
“No.”
I was doing that thing again, refusing help before anyone could offer it twice.
Jeremy said, “Jill, please.”
I turned the phone face down on the counter. I could still hear him through the speaker.
“I’m at work,” he said. “I can come talk to you.”
“No. I’m coming home when I’m ready.”
“I didn’t mean for this to happen.”
“Which part?”
He didn’t answer.
I ended the call. I didn’t yell. I didn’t threaten him. I didn’t throw the record or slap the counter. I put the paper back in its envelope and asked Bonnie for the certified copy.
She looked at me. “You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
She stamped the copy and slid it across the counter. I signed the receipt with my right hand. My left hand was still holding Jeremy’s tag envelope.
Bonnie said, “Do you want the license money back?”
“What?”
“The tag fee. You haven’t paid it.”
I looked down at the envelope. $98.50. The money he’d handed me that morning, like nothing in our house had changed.
“No,” I said. “Keep it with me.”
I took the certified copy and the tag envelope. I didn’t tell Bonnie I was sorry for crying because I hadn’t cried. I didn’t tell Jeremy I was sorry for any of it either. I was still angry. I was still ashamed. I could hear my own old excuse, that I was young and didn’t know better, and I knew how little comfort it gave me now.
I had wanted the record to prove I belonged in that marriage. It proved Jeremy had put Lacey’s name beside his, with our address still on his paperwork and my name still on his grocery lists.
The bride’s line said Lacey Burcham.
