We agreed to a small arrangement. Nothing grand. We’d sell a few calves through Earl when we could, and Earl would put the money toward keeping the store stocked. When we needed feed, he’d let us take it and settle up when our own checks came in. It helped both of us. We were not rescuing anybody. We were just trying to make it through a bad year without losing the parts of our lives we’d worked for.
