“He said that business was closed.”
“It was.”
“Then why?”
Veronica didn’t answer right away. She turned one page around and pointed to the payment approval.
My name was on it.
I looked closer. I’d signed the invoice in March, when I was trying to clear the backlog before a client audit. I remembered the day. I’d signed a stack of papers in my office while Mauro talked on the phone beside me. I remembered asking what the vendor had done. He said, “I’ll send you the details.” I’d signed anyway.
The handwriting was mine. The digital approval was mine. I’d used the same short login code I used for dozens of routine bills.
I wanted to say he’d used my login. Veronica had already checked. The approval came from my laptop, while I was in my office. I was there. I had signed.
“I didn’t know he was sending the money to his accounts,” I said.
“No,” Veronica said. “But you knew there was no work behind that invoice.”
I didn’t answer.
The first time I saw the charges, I’d called it stealing. That was true about the Platinum card. It was also true about the money he moved. But now there was a part of the story with my signature on it, and I couldn’t make that go away by saying Mauro had taken the card.
I asked Veronica what happened next. She said the company could report the payments and seek repayment. She said I needed to tell the outside accountant everything I remembered, including the invoice I approved. I didn’t have a good answer for how the company would look. I didn’t ask her to make it sound better.
I told Denise the same thing the next morning.
“I signed it,” I said. “I knew the work wasn’t real.”
Denise looked tired. She didn’t look surprised.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I thought I could keep it from becoming a bigger problem.”
“It became a bigger problem.”
“I know.”
She nodded once. “Then we fix what we can.”
The company reported the false payments and stopped the accounts. Mauro’s lawyer arranged repayment from what remained in his business account. The bank removed the Vail charges from my card after its review. The trip never happened. Mauro didn’t fight the divorce once he saw the records. He moved out of the house after the court approved the temporary arrangement, and Patricia and Jamie stopped calling it theirs.
I was relieved. I was also ashamed of how relieved I felt when the card charges were reversed. It was a clean number in a clean place. The company payments weren’t like that. I couldn’t get back to a version of the story where I had only been the person wronged.
At the final meeting about the company repayment, Mauro came in with his lawyer. He looked at the folder but not at me. We had talked about the card, the house, and the divorce. We had not talked about the invoice with my name on it.
I had planned to let the lawyers handle that, too. I had planned to be practical. Practical was what I called it when I didn’t want to say something that might hurt.
The meeting ended. Mauro stood up. His lawyer went to the door, then waited for him.
I said, “Mauro.”
He turned back.
“I knew the invoice wasn’t real.”
His mouth tightened. “You signed it.”
“I did.”
“So don’t act like you’re better than me.”
“I’m not.”
He looked at me, waiting for the rest. I’d avoided this sentence for months. I’d avoided it when he took the card, when I filed the report, when I sat with Veronica and looked at the signature.
“I knew,” I said. “And I helped you hide it.”
Mauro looked down at the paper between us. For once, he didn’t tell me it was just how his family was. I left my signature on the table where both of us could see it.
