Dad said he hadn’t seen it. Mom said nobody had told her. The representative said they were responsible for understanding the documents they’d signed. He also said the funds were being held in escrow while the review continued, and the attempted transfer could not be completed without the required authorization.
Mom turned to Alexis. “Why didn’t you tell us?”
Alexis looked at the papers in Dad’s hand.
“I did,” she said.
That was the only line that really stung.
Dad asked what would happen next. The team explained that the sale would be paused, the buyer’s money would remain held, and the proper office would review the attempted transfer. They asked for copies of everything. Dad handed over the closing papers, but kept looking at the notation as if it might change if he stared at it long enough.
There were no handcuffs. No one dragged my parents out. The people from the review team weren’t there to punish them in front of us. They were there because the house had a rule attached to it, and my parents had ignored that rule.
The deal was stopped. Meridian got its money back after the review. My parents didn’t get the finder’s fee. They had to pay legal costs and answer questions about the sale. The house stayed with Alexis, and the official office reviewed the way her family had been listed on the paperwork.
The part I wish I could take back is how ordinary it all felt before the doorbell. I had laughed at the joke about her job. I’d let Dad talk about her car like it proved she was foolish. I’d known they hadn’t asked her to sell, but I’d chosen not to say it out loud.
After the officials left, Mom kept asking Alexis to explain everything. Alexis said the people handling the review would talk to her directly. Dad said they were family and should be able to work it out at home.
Alexis put her cup in the sink.
“I can’t do that for you,” she said.
Then she picked up her coat and left.
I followed her to the porch. I told her I was sorry I’d laughed. I told her I should’ve asked whether she’d agreed to the sale. I said I’d believed the easiest version because it made Christmas easier for me.
She stood by her Honda with her keys in her hand.
“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with that,” she said.
“I know.”
She didn’t hug me. She didn’t tell me it was fine. I’m glad she didn’t.
A few weeks later, the review was finished. The sale was canceled, the property record stayed in place, and the buyer had no claim to the house. My parents had to deal with the money they’d expected to receive, and the questions about why they’d pushed the sale through without the proper approval.
Alexis didn’t come to dinner for a while. I stopped making excuses for Dad when he called her difficult. I also stopped acting as if one apology meant I’d done enough.
On a Sunday in February, Alexis asked me to bring a folder from her house to the office handling the review. I drove over. She gave me the folder and a spare key, then waited by the door while I checked the papers.
The notation was printed near the bottom of the top page. I read it this time.
Alexis said she’d call when she knew what happened next. I nodded. The key was cold in my palm, and I didn’t try to turn that into forgiveness. I took the folder and left the door unlocked behind me.
