The message on my old tablet said Marcus would sign anything if we called it a birthday gift.

I read it twice at my kitchen table, with my reading glasses sliding down my nose and a cup of coffee going cold beside me. The message was from my daughter, Denise, to Marcus’s father, Richard. I knew what she meant before I knew how much she had done. I wish I could say I called her right then. I didn’t. I set the tablet facedown and sat there long enough for the coffee to get a skin on it.
