I got one thing wrong at the airport: I thought Jeremy had changed his mind about coming home because something had happened to him. He hadn’t. He’d asked to stay overseas, and he let me bring our twin girls there dressed for his return before I knew.
That’s the part I keep getting asked about. The soldier. The flight. The video Jeremy sent me. I’ll answer it straight, though I still have to go back and sort out which parts I knew and which parts I only thought I knew.
Jeremy had been away nine months. Our girls, June and Nora, were born in March, while he was deployed. He’d seen them on a phone screen, usually with the sound cutting out or his face frozen at a bad angle. One time he watched Nora yawn for almost a full minute because the call lagged. He laughed when it finally caught up.
“I saw that,” he said.
“No, you didn’t,” I told him.
“I saw enough.”
I’m not saying he didn’t love them. I believe he did. I also believe he was scared of coming home and being needed by three people at once. Those two things can both be true. I wish I’d understood that before I took his words as a promise.
About nine hours before his scheduled arrival, Jeremy called from the airport overseas. He said he was waiting to board. I remember there was a metal clanking sound behind him, like someone moving a cart, and he kept turning his head toward the gate announcement.
“I miss you terribly,” he said. “I can’t wait to hold our girls.”
Then he laughed about the pictures I’d sent. “They’re bigger every time I see them.”
“They’re babies. They do that.”
“I know. I’m sorry I missed it.”
He’d said that before. I used to tell him to stop apologizing because it wasn’t his fault he’d been sent away. That morning I said it again.
“You’re coming home. That’s what matters.”
“Right,” he said. “All three of my girls will be waiting.”
He sent a short video of himself walking toward the plane. I watched it once while we were still on the call, then again after we hung up. He had his bag over one shoulder and gave the camera a tired little grin. I didn’t notice anything wrong. I didn’t look for anything wrong.
The thing is, I had been getting used to making a life out of pieces. A three-minute call. A picture of a bottle label so he could tell me which formula he’d helped pick. A voice message I played while I rocked one baby and tried not to wake the other. I was tired enough that small reassurances felt like solid ground.
I didn’t sleep much before the flight. At 5:40 in the morning I dressed the girls in matching shirts his mother had bought. DADDY’S HOME was printed across the front in blue letters. I put them in the double stroller and tied three balloons to the handle because I thought that was what a homecoming was supposed to look like. One balloon kept brushing the back of my hand. I remember that. I remember being annoyed and then feeling bad for being annoyed.
On the drive, I checked the flight tracker whenever I got stuck at a light. I don’t recommend that, by the way. I know better now. I kept checking anyway.
At the airport, the board changed to LANDED. People came through the arrivals doors in clumps. I watched each group. A woman near me spotted a young service member and ran into his arms. People clapped. I clapped too, a little, and then felt foolish because I was watching someone else’s reunion while looking for my own.
Someone touched my shoulder.
I turned around expecting Jeremy. It was a man in a formal uniform. He had no suitcase. He looked at my face, then at the stroller.
“Are you waiting for Jeremy?” he asked.
“Yes. He’s my husband.”
“I’m sorry. He isn’t coming.”
I laughed, not because it was funny. I thought he’d got the wrong family. I held up my phone and showed him the flight tracker.
“That’s the flight he was supposed to be on.”
“Your husband wasn’t aboard.”
“He sent me a video boarding.”
The soldier nodded once, like he’d already heard that part.
“I’m Staff Sergeant Price. I was with Jeremy overseas.”
I looked at his name tag, then back at him. “So what happened?”
“I can explain. I’m sorry this is where you’re hearing it.”
I asked if Jeremy was hurt. Sergeant Price said no. I asked if he was in trouble. He said not in the way I meant. Then I asked him to please stop speaking like he was reading a form and tell me what happened.
He glanced at the babies. “He asked to be taken off the flight roster.”
I thought I’d misheard him.
“Why?”
“He put in a request to stay with the unit.”
“For how long?”
“The request is for another year. It hasn’t been approved yet.”
My first thought was that this was a mistake. My second was that the soldier was standing too close to my stroller for me to keep pretending there was a simple explanation.
“Did Jeremy know I was bringing the girls?”
“Yes.”
“He knew we were here?”
“Yes.”
I looked down at the shirts. One of the babies had spit-up on the word HOME. I wiped at it with my thumb, which didn’t help.
“Then why did he tell me he was on the plane?”
Sergeant Price didn’t answer right away. I could tell he was trying to choose his words. I didn’t want careful words. I wanted the exact ones.
“He told me he didn’t know how to tell you,” he said.
I said, “That’s not an answer.”
“No. It isn’t.”
I asked why he’d come to meet me. He said Jeremy had asked him to make sure I got home safely. That made me mad in a plain, almost boring way. Jeremy had taken care of the hard decision for himself and left another man to carry the part where I found out.
“I can get myself home,” I said.
“I know.”
I wanted to leave right then, but I also wanted something I could point to. I asked if Sergeant Price had a message from Jeremy. He took a folded sheet from the inside pocket of his jacket and held it out. It wasn’t official paperwork. It was a letter on lined paper, folded twice.
“I didn’t read it,” he said.
I took it, but didn’t open it. I put it in my coat pocket. I was holding the stroller with one hand and the balloons with the other. I didn’t want the girls to roll away while I read something that might make me forget where I was.
I drove home with the radio off. The girls fell asleep before we got out of the airport parking lot. I kept looking at the empty passenger seat. Jeremy had asked me to leave it clear so he could sit beside the car seats on the drive home. I’d even moved the diaper bag to the back. That detail is silly, but there it is.
At home, I got both girls inside. I left the balloons tied to the stroller in the entryway. I took off their little shirts and changed them into sleepers. Nora had a red mark on her cheek from the car seat strap. June was awake and sucking on her hand.
I put a bottle on the counter. Then I took the letter from my pocket and set it beside the bottle.
I didn’t open it.
I called Jeremy. His phone rang until voicemail. I didn’t leave a message. I tried again about ten minutes later. Same thing.
Then he sent a text.
“I’m sorry. I couldn’t do it.”
I wrote, “You could have told me before I dressed them.”
He wrote back, “I know.”
I wanted to ask what had changed. I wanted to ask if there was someone else, if he was sick, if he’d been threatened, if I’d missed a warning. I also wanted to ask whether he’d looked at the video he sent me and understood what it would do to me. I didn’t send those questions. I didn’t trust myself to ask one at a time.
Instead, I called Sergeant Price. I don’t know why. I think I wanted another person to confirm that this was real.
“Did he tell you when he decided?” I asked.
“Three days ago.”
That was the first answer that hurt in a way I could measure. Three days. I had sent Jeremy a picture of the girls asleep in the same crib on the same day. He had sent me a heart. I’d thought he meant it as a small, ordinary thing. Maybe it was. Maybe he’d already decided he wasn’t getting on the plane.
“Was the video from that morning?”
“I don’t know,” Price said. “He told me he’d sent you a video.”
I checked the video details. I’m not very good with phone settings, but I found the date. The file had been created three days earlier. The airport gate in it was the one Jeremy had used on his last trip out. I knew because I’d saved a picture he’d sent from that same gate, back when he first deployed. The video wasn’t new. The time stamp on his message was new.
I sat at the kitchen table with the phone in my hand. The bottle was still on the counter. The girls were making small sleep sounds in the next room. I thought of all the times I’d watched the video and taken it as proof he was coming. He hadn’t even needed to make a new one.
That night, his mother called. I almost didn’t answer. She’d helped me with the girls after they were born and had brought groceries when I was too tired to think about dinner. She loved Jeremy, obviously, but she loved me too. I didn’t want to punish her for something she hadn’t done.
“I heard from him,” she said.
“Did he tell you he wasn’t coming?”
“He told me he was asking to stay. I thought he’d told you.”
I felt my face get warm. Not at her. At the whole mess.
“When did he tell you?”
“Sunday evening.”
I asked if she knew he’d sent me that video. She said she didn’t. Then she said the thing people say when they want to help but don’t know what to do.
“He’s been under a lot of pressure.”
“I know,” I said. “So have I.”
She went quiet. I don’t mean that as an attack on her. She was probably trying to work out how to say she agreed with both of us. I didn’t want her to solve it. I wanted her to hear the plain fact.
“Did he say why he wants to stay?” I asked.
“He said he doesn’t think he can be a good father right now.”
That made me laugh once, but there was nothing funny in it.
“He has two daughters. That’s not a job he can turn down.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
She didn’t answer. We ended the call a few minutes later. I felt bad about snapping at her. I still do. But I was not going to spend the whole day making everyone else feel better because I’d been left with the babies and the explanation.
I opened the letter after midnight. I’d fed June, changed Nora, and sat down at the kitchen table with the paper. My hands smelled like the baby soap we used, that mild powder smell that never really washed off. Jeremy’s handwriting was close and slanted. He’d started with my name, scratched it out, and written it again.
He said he was sorry. He said he loved me and the girls. He said he’d been scared of coming home and failing us. He wrote that the work overseas made sense to him because he knew what was expected every hour. At home, he said, he couldn’t tell if I needed him to hold a baby, wash bottles, or just sit there and not talk.
He said he knew that sounded like an excuse.
It did. But I understood enough to know there was something real under it. He had always been good at jobs with clear rules. At home, he’d ask if I needed help while I was already doing the thing he could have helped with. I’d get mad. Then I’d say, “Never mind, I’ve got it,” and do it myself. It was a bad habit. I was tired and proud, and I’d made it easy for him to think I didn’t need him.
That didn’t make what he did okay. It just meant I could see how we got to the edge of this without pretending one of us had been perfect.
At the end of the letter, he wrote that he’d asked for another year and that the request had to go through his chain of command. He didn’t know if it would be approved. He didn’t know if he could come home after all. I read the last two lines twice.
“I asked to stay. I was scared to come home.”
I sat there for a while. I didn’t cry. I had done plenty of that in the early months after the girls were born, over things smaller than this. Mostly I was tired. The fridge clicked on. June fussed once, then stopped.
In the morning I called Sergeant Price again. I asked what I needed to know about the request and whether there was a way to get the facts directly from the unit. He told me Jeremy’s command could confirm the status but couldn’t promise an outcome. I wrote down the number he gave me. I called it after breakfast, while the girls were in their bouncer seats.
The person who answered transferred me twice. The third person told me Jeremy’s request was pending. I asked if he was still expected to return at the end of his current assignment if the request was denied. She said yes. I asked if I’d be told when a decision was made. She said I could be added as his emergency contact, but she couldn’t discuss his personnel details with me without his permission.
I didn’t argue. I asked what I could do to make sure I wasn’t left guessing about travel plans again. She gave me a form and an email address.
I filled out what I could. I sent Jeremy a message telling him I wasn’t asking for a promise he couldn’t keep. I was asking him not to tell me he was coming home unless he had a confirmed date and a seat on a plane.
He replied, “You’re right.”
That was it. No long defense. No angry answer. I didn’t know if that was because he understood or because he didn’t know what else to say. I left it alone.
The request took six weeks to get decided. During those weeks, Jeremy called the girls more often. At first I kept the calls short. He’d say their names, ask if they were eating, and watch me change a diaper while the video froze. Sometimes I felt mean for not making it easy. Then I remembered the airport and the shirts, and I let the call end when I was ready.
He asked if I was still angry.
“I’m not done being angry,” I said.
“Okay.”
“I’m not trying to punish you. I just can’t keep acting like this didn’t happen.”
“I understand.”
I wanted to believe him. I didn’t say that.
He did ask me about the girls’ first laugh and whether June still made that little snorting sound when she got excited. I told him she did. Then I told him Nora had started grabbing my hair. I heard him laugh at that, and for a few seconds it felt like our old calls. That was the hard part. Nothing about him had turned into a monster. He was still my husband, and I still missed the way he used to leave his work boots by the door. I was also furious with him. Both things stayed true.
When the decision came, Jeremy called me before the official email arrived. He was not coming home on the next transport. His request to stay had been approved through the end of the year. He said he could come back sooner if the unit released him, but he couldn’t promise when. He asked if I wanted him to keep calling the girls.
I said yes, because they were his daughters. I also told him I wasn’t going to be the person who explained every missed call for him.
“I understand,” he said.
“Do you?”
“I think so.”
I had no good answer to that. I wasn’t going to tell him I forgave him. I wasn’t going to tell him I didn’t love him. I told him I needed a while to decide what I wanted from the marriage, and that I wouldn’t make that decision during a phone call.
He said, “That’s fair.”
It was the first time in weeks I believed he meant something without needing to check it.
A few days later, I folded the twins’ matching shirts and put them in the back of a drawer. I didn’t throw them out. I wasn’t ready for that, and I didn’t want the shirts to become a symbol I had to explain to myself. They were just shirts. They’d fit the girls for anothermonth, maybe two. I put the letter in the same drawer. Jeremy still calls the girls, and I answer when I’m able. If he comes home, I’ll decide what happens then. I won’t dress the girls for a promise again.
The shirts are folded with the words facing down.
