The black canvas bag was open beside Paul’s grave when I got there, and Megan was holding an envelope with my name on the back.
She’d called me eight minutes earlier. I could still hear the way she said, “Laurel, did you put this here?” I said I was coming. I did not say yes.
By the time I reached her, the yellow flowers were on the ground and the envelope was open. Megan had read the first few lines. She was rubbing one thumb over the paper, over and over, like she was trying to smooth it flat.
“What is this?” she asked.
I could have lied again. I’d done that for five years.
Instead, I looked at the bag I had left there and said, “It’s Paul’s letter. I should’ve given it to you a long time ago.”
That was the worst part. Not the cemetery, not the bag, not even the letter. I’d made the choice for her before she could make it herself.
I’m Megan’s older sister. I was forty-one that year, and I lived about twenty minutes from her in a county-seat town in the Missouri Ozarks. I work at the front desk of a dental office. I’m good at keeping my voice calm when somebody’s upset, which is useful at work and not always useful at home.
Megan was thirty-nine when she found the bag. Paul had been dead five years. He was thirty-four when he died, and they’d been married nine years.
The year he died, Megan and Paul were trying to have a baby. They hadn’t told many people. I knew because Megan had asked me to go with her to an appointment once, then changed her mind the night before. She said she wanted Paul there, not me. I said, “Of course.” I was glad she’d said it, and also a little hurt. That part was mine to get over.
They had the kind of marriage that could look easy from the outside. Paul bought yellow flowers for the kitchen table, usually on his way home from work. Megan knew which gas station had the coffee he liked. They bickered about little things, too. Laundry, money, who’d forgotten to call their mother back. Nothing that made me think they were in trouble.
I didn’t know how worried they both were about having a child. I learned more about that after Paul died. Not all at once.
The letter had been in my cedar chest since the week before his accident.
I’d kept telling myself I would give it to Megan after the funeral. Then after the first Christmas. Then after the first anniversary. Each time I found some reason to wait. I told myself I was being kind, as if that made it any less my decision.
I didn’t put the letter in the black bag to be dramatic. It was the first bag I found in my closet that would fit the envelope without folding it. I’d gone to the cemetery before Megan, set it beside the headstone, and driven home. I thought she’d be alone long enough to read it before I had to face what I’d done.
She had said she wanted to go alone. I used that as my excuse.
The day I first got the letter, Paul came over to my house because my kitchen cabinet door kept slipping off its hinge. He was the sort of person who’d fix something while saying it was no trouble, then leave before I could even make him a sandwich.
He had the cabinet door in one hand and a screwdriver in the other when I asked him how things were going with Megan.
“Fine,” he said.
I leaned against the counter. “Fine, fine?”
He gave me a look. “You’re doing that sister thing.”
“What sister thing?”
“Trying to hear the thing I didn’t say.”
I should’ve let it go. I didn’t. I asked if they were still going to the appointment, and he set down the screwdriver.
“We are,” he said. “I’m not trying to get out of it.”
“I didn’t say you were.”
“No, but you thought it.”
I was annoyed with him. I’m sure my face showed it.
He rubbed the side of his thumb over a small black mark from the cabinet hinge. “I’m scared, okay?”
I thought he meant the appointment. “You’re allowed to be.”
He shook his head. “That’s not all of it.”
He sat at my kitchen table. I remember the tea towel on his shoulder, because I’d asked him to wipe the screw off before he got grease on his shirt. I remember that silly little thing. I can’t remember what I did with the screwdriver afterward.
Paul told me his own father had been in and out of his life. He didn’t want to be that kind of dad. He said he knew Megan was waiting for him to feel sure, and he hated that he couldn’t give her a simple answer.
“I love her,” he said. “I want a family with her.”
“Then tell her that.”
“I’ve tried.”
“Try better.”
He pressed his lips together. “I know.”
I was blunt with him. Maybe too blunt. I thought I was helping. I said he couldn’t make Megan do all the worrying while he kept his own fear tucked away.
He looked down at the table. “You’re right.”
That was the first time I’d heard him say it without arguing.
He took a small envelope out of his coat pocket. His handwriting was on the front. Megan’s name. He set it beside my mug, where the rim had left a pale brown ring on the table.
“I started writing this to her,” he said. “I keep getting stuck.”
“Why are you giving it to me?”
“If I chicken out, give it to her.”
“You’re not going to chicken out.”
He gave me a tired half smile. “You don’t know that.”
“Paul, I’m not your secretary.”
“I know.” He picked the envelope back up and pressed it into my hand. “Just hold it for me. I’ll talk to her first.”
I could’ve handed it back. I could’ve said that wasn’t fair to Megan, or that he needed to stop hiding behind me. I could’ve told him to leave it on their kitchen counter and let her decide when to read it.
I didn’t. I put it in the drawer beside my takeout menus and grocery coupons.
That was the last time Paul came to my house.
The next Wednesday, he was driving home on the highway when a truck crossed the center line. Megan got the call from the state police. By the time I reached her, she was sitting on the bottom step in her socks, holding her phone with both hands.
“They said it happened fast,” she told me.
I sat beside her. “I’m here.”
She kept looking at the screen. “I was mad at him.”
“For what?”
“I can’t even remember.”
She could remember. They’d argued the night before about the appointment. Paul had asked if they could talk later. Megan had said, “There’s always later with you.” She hated herself for that sentence for a long time.
I didn’t tell her I had his letter.
I told myself it didn’t say anything important. I’d only seen the first line when I put it away. I told myself the letter might make her feel worse. And, if I’m being honest, I was scared she’d ask me why Paul had brought it to me instead of her.
Those were the reasons I used. I know because I kept repeating them.
After the funeral, Megan stayed with me for three nights. She slept on my couch, though I offered my bed. On the second morning she stood at the sink, holding a mug and staring out the window at the neighbor’s red shed.
“I don’t know how to go home,” she said.
“You don’t have to today.”
“I can’t sit here forever.”
“No,” I said. “You can’t.”
I wanted to give her something solid. I made food she didn’t eat and found a show we used to watch as kids. I cleaned her kitchen because she said she couldn’t stand looking at the dishes. I was busy enough not to open the drawer.
When she went back to her house, she took the yellow flowers from the funeral home. They started to wilt on her kitchen table. She couldn’t bring herself to throw them out, so I did it for her one afternoon when she was in the shower.
I don’t know why I remember the stem water. It had a smell like old pennies. I remember that more clearly than what I said to her that day.
The first anniversary came. Megan took the morning off and went to the cemetery. She brought yellow flowers. I offered to go with her, but she said, “I want to be by myself.”
I didn’t push. I went to work and spent the day answering the phone, knowing where she was and not knowing what she was thinking.
She went every year after that. Some years I offered to drive. Some years I didn’t. She always said no. I told myself this was her way of getting through it. I also knew I was relieved she never asked me to come.
The envelope stayed in the drawer for two years. Then I moved it to the cedar chest because I needed the drawer for batteries and takeout menus. I’d started to feel like I was hiding it from myself, which is ridiculous. I knew where it was.
Megan began dating again after about three years. She went out with a man named Keith for a few months. I liked him well enough. He was polite to me, which is not a high bar, but he cleared it.
One night, after Keith had gone home, Megan called me.
“I’m not sure I’m ready,” she said.
“For Keith?”
“For any of it.”
“You don’t have to decide tonight.”
“I know. I just hate that everyone thinks I’m supposed to be okay now.”
“I don’t think that.”
She went quiet. Then she said, “Paul would’ve told me I was making it harder than it had to be.”
“Probably.”
“And he’d be right.”
I had the letter in the cedar chest, three rooms away. I could’ve taken it out. I could’ve said, “There’s something he wrote before he died.” Instead I said, “You’re allowed to miss him and still go out with somebody.”
That was true. It just wasn’t the thing she needed from me.
Keith didn’t last. Megan didn’t fall apart when they ended it. She went to work, called me about her car insurance, complained that her neighbor kept parking too close to her mailbox. Her life grew around the grief. I watched it happen and told myself the letter mattered less each year.
The truth is, I was protecting myself, too. If Megan read it and asked why I’d held it back, I’d have to answer. I didn’t want to be the person who had taken one more choice away from her.
So I stayed quiet. That felt easier than doing the right thing late.
On the fifth anniversary, my sister called me from the cemetery.
I’d offered to go with her that morning. I always did. She said, “Thanks, but I want to go alone.”
I said, “Okay.”
I stopped at my kitchen table afterward and stared at the spot where Paul’s envelope had been for a while. It was in the cedar chest under a stack of old tablecloths. I could have called Megan and told her the truth before she left. I could have driven it to her house and put it in her hand.
Instead, I took the black canvas bag from the closet.
The cemetery had a road crew near the main gate, so Megan had to use the other entrance. I knew she’d be there soon. I didn’t know exactly when. I set the bag beside Paul’s headstone and drove away before she arrived.
I was ten minutes from home when my phone rang.
“Did you put this here?” Megan asked.
I looked at the steering wheel. “I’m coming.”
“Did you?”
“I’ll be there in a few minutes.”
She didn’t hang up. Neither did I. I could hear her breathing and, once, the scrape of the bag on gravel.
When I got there, she had the letter open in her hands. Her yellow flowers were lying beside the headstone. One had come loose from the bunch and rolled down the small slope.
“Why did you do this?” she asked.
I didn’t answer right away. I wanted to say I thought it was better this way. I wanted to say Paul had asked me to hold it. Both things were true, and neither was an answer.
“I was scared,” I said.
“Of what?”
“That it would hurt you.”
She looked at the letter. “It’s already been five years.”
“I know.”
“You knew he wrote to me?”
“I knew he started a letter.”
“And you kept it?”
“Yes.”
Megan looked up at me. “You don’t get to choose when I’m ready.”
“I know.”
“You keep saying that.”
“I don’t have a better answer.”
She took a few steps away from the headstone. Not far. Just enough to make room between us. I wanted to follow her, but I stayed where I was.
“Did he tell you what was in it?” she asked.
“No. He said he’d talk to you first. He asked me to give it to you if he chickened out.”
“And he died before he could.”
“Yes.”
“So you decided I didn’t need to know.”
I looked down at the gravel. “I decided I didn’t want to be the one who made you hurt.”
“You made that choice for me anyway.”
She was right. I didn’t try to soften it.
Megan held the page with both hands. There were only a few short lines, and his writing slanted up toward the right like it always did. She read it once without speaking. Then she read it again, slower.
I didn’t ask what it said.
After a while, she lowered the paper. “He was scared?”
“He told me he was.”
“He never said that to me.”
“I know.”
“Did you tell him to?”
“I did. I wasn’t gentle about it.”
She gave a small, sharp laugh that wasn’t really a laugh. “That sounds like you.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I know you’re sorry.” She folded the letter in half. “That doesn’t mean I’m not mad.”
“You can be mad.”
“I’m mad at him, too.”
That surprised me, though it shouldn’t have. She turned toward the grave again, her hand still closed around the paper.
“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with this,” she said.
“You don’t have to do anything today.”
She looked at me. “That’s not the same as keeping it from me.”
“No. It isn’t.”
For a minute, we didn’t say anything. The flowers were still on the ground. I bent to pick them up, but Megan reached them first.
One stem had snapped near the bottom. She set it back with the others anyway.
Then she opened the letter again and read the last line out loud. “I want you to know I’m trying, even when I’m scared.”
Her voice caught on the word scared. She stopped there. I didn’t touch her. I had been trying to fix things with my hands since I was a kid, and this wasn’t something I could fix.
“I wish he’d told me,” she said.
“I do too.”
She folded the page along the old crease. “I don’t forgive you for keeping it.”
“I understand.”
“I’m not saying never.”
“I understand that, too.”
She put the letter back in the envelope. Her fingers were shaking a little, but she got it in. Then she put the envelope in her coat pocket.
I picked up the black bag. The strap caught on the edge of the stone, and I had to pull it free.
“Don’t make me talk about this in the car,” she said.
“I won’t.”
“I mean it, Laurel.”
“I know.”
She looked at me, tired and mad and still my little sister, even though she was old enough to be a grandmother if life had gone differently. “Can you come by Thursday?”
“For what?”
“Coffee. I don’t want to be alone with this forever. Just not right now.”
“I’ll come Thursday.”
She nodded and turned to straighten the yellow flowers. One bunch had shifted, so she tucked it against the stone with the broken stem hidden underneath.
I waited while she finished. Then I carried the empty bag back to my car.
On Thursday, I brought coffee. Megan set Paul’s letter on the table between us, still inside the envelope. She didn’t open it againShe didn’t open it again. She pushed the envelope toward me and said, “I’m not ready to read it with you here.”
I nodded. We drank our coffee while it went cold, and when I left, she kept the letter on the table. That was enough for Thursday.
