The key fob was still warm from the glove box when I pulled into the gravel drive at 3:15 on a Thursday.

I had the radio turned down low, mostly because I didn’t want to hear the local country station play another commercial for seed corn, but also because the quiet inside the cab felt like something I could hide behind. That black Silverado sat high on thirty-three-inch tires, the rubber smelling like hot warehouse tar and fresh mold release. My buddy Rick at Turner Chevrolet had slapped a temporary dealer tag in the back window with black electrical tape, and I sat there for a minute just watching the reflection of the hood in our front picture window.

Megan was inside. I knew that.

She had come home from the hospital seventy-two hours earlier with eighteen stitches and a baby who cried whenever the room dropped below seventy-two degrees.

That money was supposed to buy a white wood crib with a matching changing table from the picture she had taped to the fridge with a strawberry magnet. $1,284. That was the price circled in blue ink. The rest of the $6,913 refund was supposed to keep us afloat while she was out of work from the hair salon, covering diapers, formula samples we had to buy out of pocket, and the power bill before the coop shut off the meter.

Instead, I had a truck payment of $584 a month for the next seventy-two months.

I didn’t go inside right away.

I sat there because I was thirty-four years old, working the floor at the grain elevator for twenty-two dollars an hour, and every time I looked at our savings account balance of $412, I felt like a man standing on thin ice in heavy boots. I wanted to feel solid. I wanted the men in the parking lot at work to nod when I pulled up on Monday morning.

Rick had leaned against the fender of that truck with a cup of stale coffee and said the words that gave me permission to do it.

You’re a family man now. You deserve something that looks like it.

I bought the lie because I was terrified of the truth.

The truth was that Sophie was tiny, her skin yellow around the edges from jaundice, and Megan looked at me sometimes like she was trying to remember who I used to be before the bills started stacking up behind the toaster.

When I finally pushed the front door open, the house smelled stale.

Megan was sitting in the floral recliner in the corner of the living room with the baby tucked against her chest in a flannel swaddle. Her hair was greasy, pulled back into a clip she hadn’t washed in three days, and her face had that gray, washed-out look women get when they haven’t slept for more than forty minutes at a stretch. There was a yellow burp cloth on the linoleum right near her foot, and she was staring past me toward the driveway.

She didn’t move. She just tracked me with her eyes.

What is that? she asked. Her voice was flat, like she was reading off a grocery receipt.

I set my keys on the counter by the microwave.

A truck, I said.

With what money?

That was when my stomach did a hard drop, but instead of backing down, my jaw tightened up the way it always did when I knew I was cornered. I had practiced the excuse on the drive home, turning the sentences over in my head like loose change.

The crib can wait a couple weeks, I told her, trying to sound reasonable. They sleep in a bassinet anyway. Elaine bought that one from Target.

Sophie needs a safe place to sleep, Megan said. Her voice didn’t rise. She didn’t yell. That was the part that should have warned me, but I was too busy protecting my own pride to listen.

I said the line that makes me sick to my stomach every time I think about it now.

Babies don’t know what furniture costs.

Her face didn’t crumple. It just closed. Like a drawer being shoved shut in the dark.

The hospital bracelet was still around her wrist, white plastic with the thermal print fading around the edges where she had washed her hands. Our daughter’s name was printed right next to hers in tiny black letters. She hadn’t even taken the time to cut it off with kitchen shears because every second of her day was spent trying to get that baby to latch while her stitches burned.

She didn’t start crying. She didn’t throw anything.

She just reached out her left hand and pointed at the counter where I had dropped my phone.

Give me that, she said.

I thought she wanted to check the balance on her own phone or maybe look at some stupid bill, so I handed it over like an idiot who thought he still had the upper hand.

She didn’t open the banking app.

She tapped my contacts and called her mother first. Elaine answered on the second ring, and Megan told her, in two short sentences, exactly what I had done with the nursery money.

Then she called my father out in Grafton. She didn’t yell at him either. She just told him his son had bought a truck with the grocery money while his granddaughter was sleeping in a laundry basket.

My dad didn’t say much on the speakerphone, but I could hear him breathing heavy through the tobacco spit.

Then she did the one thing I never expected.

She looked up my recent call log, found Turner Chevrolet, and dialed the direct line for the finance office. She asked for the manager by name. She went to high school with his younger sister, and she remembered every single track meet they ran together.

I laughed once, loud and fake, because I was sweating through my shirt.

You’re being dramatic, Megan, I said.

I remember that sound. It was the last second I thought I was still running the show.

At 6:12, my phone started vibrating against the laminate countertop.

The screen showed Turner Chevrolet.

I picked it up on the third ring, thinking maybe Rick was calling to tell me about some paperwork I forgot to sign or a duplicate title.

Rick’s voice wasn’t friendly anymore. There was no coffee-shop buddy talk left in him.

He didn’t even say hello.

He said, Get back down here right now. The manager is standing by the front desk with your trade-in and the canceled paperwork, and if you aren’t in this parking lot in twenty minutes, I’m driving this truck off your grass and leaving your car in the middle of Route 9.

The line went dead with a hard click.

I looked over at Megan. She was still sitting in that recliner, her face pale, the baby sleeping against her collarbone like nothing in the world had happened.

She didn’t look at me when I grabbed my jacket off the back of the sofa.

She just reached down, picked up the yellow burp cloth from the floor, and folded it in half with one hand.
